Assembling a Santana Arriva S&S coupled tandem


inflate tires
tighten R rack bolts to R triangle
use strap to hang F triangle by headtube from overhead support
attach four loose tubes, use teflon grease
attach R triangle, use teflon grease
bolton R mech
assemble R wheel:
     screw Arai drum on hub, insert axle w/R endcap, cassette, hub,
     wide spacer and two shims to brake plate, brake plate, L endcap,
     tighten with two 5 mm Allen wrenches, insert skewer
install R wheel
install skewer in F wheel, F wheel in fork
lower frame from strap onto fork in headtube
install Chris King upper race, two spacers, cushion w/wood block, pound together
install stem, starbolt cap, and starbolt, tighten, center&tighten stem binders
release strap, lower frame on wheels to ground, tighten strap to hold frame upright
adjust pilot handlebar, tighten binder bolts
install F brake L caliper, adjust travel if necessary
install pilot seatpost, tighten, tighten stoker handlebar
install stoker seatpost, tighten
install stoker R crank on drive chain, remove bolt keeper if necessary to guide it
install stoker L crank
install pilot R crank
install pilot L crank and timing chain aligned in phase
install pedals
feed cable to Arai, crossover L to center adjustment brazeon
feed and reconnect cables to F and R mechs, crossover to opposing brazeons
rotate and tighten bell
rotate and tighten cadence pickup
install cyclecomputer mount on handlebar
install cyclecomputer pickup on R fork blade
reinstall and tighten strap to lift R wheel, dialin F and R mechs
install mirrors, pump, waterbottles

 


Tool Kit


15 mm pedal wrench
combi tool: 4, 5, 6 mm Allen wrenches, Phillips and straight blade screwdrivers
8 mm Allen wrench: crank remover
2nd 5 mm Allen wrench (ground from a useless 5.5): two necessary to remove rear axle
3 mm Allen wrench: for mirrors
10-8 mm open end wrench and 2nd 8mm wrench: for racks
crank bolt keeper removal wrench: necessary to install cranks on billet spindle
     because the crank ridges and spindle grooves are blind with the keeper in
S&S coupling wrench with unused jaws taped
blue touchup paint (haven't yet found matching yellow touchup paint)
teflon grease for S&S coupling threads
wood block to cushion pounding steering tube from Chris King headset
electrical tape for misc uses
16' strap with cambuckle, a cheap weightless traveling workstand
Fast Orange hand cleaner with pumice (it's a dirty job ...)
